September 29

Today's assignment was to draw something soft.  This is a strip of bright cotton quilting fabric.  I will need to revisit this assignment when I'm better at curves and folds.  Three dimensions in a two dimensional medium is very challenging.  Oh well, practice will make, if not perfect, at least better....  Mary

September 25

Tonight's assignment was to draw a group of 2 or more similar objects.  These are two rocks from in front of our house.  One looks a bit like a pink tinted potato, but it is a lovely pink.  I think I'll need to work on drawing rocks since there is just so much variety and texture....  Mary

September 23

Trying to practice more origami patterns so I don't forget how to do them.

Today's assignment was to draw my medicine cabinet (the inside).  The only thing is we haven't had a medicine cabinet in 25 years.  Our old house and our new house both have closets in the bathroom but not a medicine cabinet.  We've gotten very good at bins and baskets on the closet shelves, so it's not a problem....  Mary

Today's assignment:  Draw something china or ceramic.  This is the white china plate with a lovely painted border that sits on the Table of Tranquility in our dining room.  This is a narrow walnut table from my grandmother's house that sits against the wall under a mirror.  There's a linen cut-work runner on the table on which this plate sits.  All other flat surfaces in our house end up with flotsam and jetsam set down on them, so the rule is that nothing is allowed to land on the Table.  It is one clutter free, calm and quiet space in the house....  Mary

Draw some keys.  These are my work keys.  Keys for offices, labs, cabinets, mail room.  I carry them with me all day every day when at work so I can open doors for everyone, all the time....  Mary

Today's assignment was to draw a bicycle or a part of one.  Not tonight.  I used a different prompt: What are you really thinking about just now?  Incorporate....  Mary

What I really like about the Toshi jewel pattern is that is looks so different depending the paper used.

We don't have a lot of fall leaves quite yet, but today's assignment is to draw a fall leaf.  I collected a few dried, curled leaves outside to work from....  Mary

The assignment to draw an eye could only mean one thing:  Draw Monster's blue eye.  Monty is an odd eyed Turkish angora.  One blue eye and one green eye.  The blue eye is from a recessive gene that is tied to deafness.  He appears to be deaf in his "blue" ear.  The cats with two blue eyes are totally deaf, as I understand it.

The blue eye is also the sleepy eye.  When Monster wakes up, the blue eye is always slower than the green eye to open.  And when he gets sleeping, the blue eye droops closed first.  Like so very many things about Monster, his eyes are indeed odd, unique and lovable....  Mary

The Toshi jewel pattern is just so easy to fold and so lovely when done.

Drawing assignment:  Draw something metallic, so I drew my pink polka-dot handled embroidery scissors....  Mary

September 12

The drawing assignment tonight was draw something you collect. On the whole I try not to collect anything anymore.  There are things I still have not divested myself of though.  Three of these are the Magi.  These three African, beaded women are about 2-1/2" high.  Originally they were Christmas ornaments, but at some point the girls designated them as the Magi for our manger scene.  The manger would be set up under the Christmas tree, and the Magi would travel throughout the house on their way to the Infant for the Epiphany on January 6.

These three beaded ladies would turn up in the strangest places.  On top of the dryer in the basement.  Sitting atop the wall clock in the dining room, which even with a chair dragged over from the table would still have been a stretch.  Even tucked in the silverware drawer.  By the evening of Epiphany, when we would have cake, pull party crackers, and wear paper hats, the Magi would have reached their destination at the manger....  Mary

Having not read ahead to today's assignment, I didn't know it was draw a chair.  So I drew the wooden stool in my studio tonight....  Mary

September 10

Today's assignment was to draw something architectural.  It was already dark so drawing a building outside was not really an option.  This is the back of small, 3 inch high, bright white ceramic chair that Eileen picked up somewhere along the line.  It's a great little piece with lovely rounded lines....  Mary

September 9

Friday is drop/add day.  Everyone must be in their classes at that point to not incur penalties.  It would be pretty difficult to catch up in these big courses after the first two weeks as well.  Needless to say, I getting mountains of emails from students who still need to get into the already filled courses and another mountain from students who want to trade sections of the courses because they have a conflict.  Having been the mother of undergrads, I know how they live and die by these class schedules, but my goodness can some of them be whiny and annoying.  I am really, really tired, and it's only Monday.

Wild card day today for drawing.  I got to draw whatever I want, so I chose Annie's beautiful woven leather ID holder (a law school gift from Eileen and Warren) and the bright red lanyard (a gift from Rick and I).  Not really doing justice to the luscious colors of the leather....  Mary

Today's assignment was to draw a book, so I drew the book that was next to me on my desk:  The Mandala Book: Patterns of the Universe.  It's a wonderful book with the most amazing images....  Mary

September 7

Folding these origami balloons is easy enough, and inflating the flat pieces into puffy spheres is still so amusing.

Today's drawing assignment was to draw anything you want.  Since I drew Duvy as what I see when I wake up, I decided it was only fair to draw Monster as well.  Since it is very hard to get Monster sitting still, I drew this from a photo.  When he does finally fall sound asleep it is usually in the dark back corner of a closet or deep under the bed behind a storage box.  As in this picture, Monster is frequently upside down, sideways, or even hanging over the edge of the stair railing.  We often speculate that he is not really a cat.  He's a space alien masquerading as a house cat just waiting for the mother ship to return....  Mary

JK and I spent the entire day at the Quilt Expo.  It was glorious, but oooh, do my feet hurt.

Tonight the assignment was to draw a piece of fruit....  Mary
