Once on All Things Considered I heard a story about the golden California poppies blooming on the hills.  They said that sailors thought the hills of California were covered in gold when they sailed along the coast.  Tourists from Japan make floating reservations so they can jump on a plane at a moment's notice and arrive in California at the absolute peak of the poppy bloom.

This lone poppy was the last one flowering in the rock garden at Olbrich this fall....  Mary
