April 30
I used a larger sheet of paper for folding this iris because there were so many interior folds in the pattern. The paper was heavier than usual though. I may try it again tomorrow with a smaller but thinner sheet. It was definitely one of those patterns that I was convinced until the very end wasn't really working. And then, voila! an iris.... Mary

We actually have two daffodils in bloom. There should be more tomorrow because it will be in the 80s. Then Thursday night will be in the 30s. Interesting weather.... Mary

Started a new beaded piece this weekend, but I can't post about it because it's a present for someone. When it's all done and presented, I can post about it.... Mary

April 26
First real day of spring. Sunny and in the high 60s. Our daffodils are still just buds, but there were some gorgeous ones open in the sunshine on the way home from the bus.... Mary

Exceedingly long day at work with a reception at the end of it, so I stayed an extra two hours. Tomorrow I get to leave three hours early and enjoy the 65 degrees and sunshine with the kitty cats on the screen porch. Maybe a daffodil or two will even open... Mary

After a couple of false starts on patterns tonight, I gave up and went with the ever fun origami balloons.... Mary

This origami shape is just so appealing. The triangular sides and the multiple papers work so well together.... Mary

This pattern folds easiest in the largest size paper. This one was 9-3/4 inches, and the folds are definitely the cleanest.... Mary

The first vase was folded with a 6 inch piece of paper. The second one was a 8-1/2 inch paper. I think it should still go bigger. We'll see.... Mary

This Chinese origami vase was one of those patterns that didn't really work until the last step. The whole thing is only 2-1/2 inches wide and the folds are little rough, but I think I'll try it again tomorrow with a larger sheet of paper to see if it comes out a little smoother.... Mary

Can we all just take a break from the crazy for awhile? What did any of the hundreds, even thousands, of innocent victims do to deserve all this violence? Mary

April 15
On the first flower, blue polka-dots, I did have to refer to the video for the troublesome fold. But then I figured a different way of doing the fold that made more sense to me. The next two flowers, I folded completely without reference to Leyla Torres' wonderful instruction video. That is one of the interesting things about origami. Even with great instructions, sometimes that way of folding a pattern just doesn't make sense to me, but I figured it out and created new synaptic connections at the same time. On to the next pattern tomorrow.... Mary

There is one portion of folding on this pattern still has me flummoxed. I can fold the whole pattern without help until I hit this one step. I'll just have to keep folding it until it makes sense to me. Thankfully it's a really fun pattern.... Mary

While Anne was grilling steaks outside this evening, I could see my breath. It's the middle of April, for heaven's sake. So I decided to take a deep breath and fold another lovely flower like last night.... Mary

Not having a good box night. None of the ones I tried really worked like they were supposed to. These are artfully stacked to hide their flaws. Guess it's back to basics again.... Mary

Attempted an elaborately folded box tonight, but the Internet did not cooperate. The video instructions crashed and would not reload. Perhaps another attempt tomorrow.... Mary

Rick and I drove up to Wausau today to the Woodson Art Museum for an origami exhibit, Folding Paper: The Infinite Possibilities of Origami. It was utterly amazing! The variety and quality of work was phenomenal.
There was also a second exhibit of works in paper that was equally as breathtaking, Calvin Nicholls: Paper Sculpture by Design. The dozens of pieces are all done completely in snipped and layered paper. Simply astonishing!
As a permanent exhibit, the museum has Owen Gromme's painting studio set up in an exhibition space with some of his original paintings. It is an amazingly Spartan space for such a prolific painter, but then maybe that was his secret.... Mary

Enrollment for the fall semester begins on Monday. It was non-stop enrollment set up for the past week at work, but I think everyone who needs permission has permission. We'll see how much panic ensues next week with all the students who do not have priority enrollment status.... Mary

Really enjoy these modular pieces. As lovely as these papers are, I think this design is a bit more effective in the solid papers I used last month.... Mary
