April 1

Rick and I went to the Arboretum today.  He told me the story of Michael Olbrich (as in Olbrich Botanical Gardens) getting up in front of the downtown Rotary Club in the 1920s and said that Madison was growing too fast and the southern shore of Lake Wingra needed to be protected.  Aldo Leopold was in the the audience that day and agreed to help.  The University of Wisconsin-Madison Arboretum is the result of their efforts.

Last weekend and again today, the Arboretum was filled with families, elderly couples, young couples, photographers, birders, bicyclists, and runners.  It is delightful to see this wonderful resource being used by so many people....  Mary
