This beautiful glass mosaic plate is from an art class Eileen took her senior year in high school.  It sits on top of hutch in our living and gets back lit by the table lamps....  Mary

Eileen has three Bakelite bracelets from back when she worked summers in an antique store.  The colors are gorgeous, the designs delightful, and the bracelets make such an appealing 'clink' when they tap together on her wrist....  Mary

This is one of the copper path lights at Olbrich.  They are shaded to only light the walk and not send light upwards to pollute the night sky.  Since we're only ever at the Garden in daylight, I've never seen one of these lit.  Do love the patina of the copper shade....  Mary

One of the wonderful things - one of many, many wonderful things - about Olbrich Gardens is that they grow things I just don't have the space or sunlight for, like big, gorgeous hibiscus....  Mary

August 25

Rick, Anne and I went to see Beasts of the Southern Wild today.  We had really been looking forward to seeing it.  Unfortunately, I had to leave in the middle of the film.  Apparently I cannot watch movies shot with hand held cameras without getting very nauseous.  This must be the first film I've seen on the big screen that was shot using this technique, and I simply could not finish watching it.

The portion I saw was amazing, and Rick and Anne both really liked the film.  I'm hoping when it comes out on video that I can watch the second half of the film on a smaller screen without having the same problem.

Another fascinating flower just beginning to open....  Mary

I think this is a Black-eyed Susan, but I've never noticed one going to seed like this.  Since I've never grown these myself, it may have just escaped my notice until now.  The structure of the seeds dropping from the center is just amazing....  Mary

Our lovely turned wooden salt shaker on a round woven place mat.  The red on the little painting doesn't show up well in the photo, alas....  Mary

Hydrangeas are one of my favorite flowers, whether the big white garden snowballs or traditional Easter-season blue orbs or the cotton candy pink tufts....  Mary

August 18

We had a lovely dinner party at our house tonight with both girls, Eileen's friend Warren, and our old neighbors, Kent, Judy and Joe.  It was a belated 10th birthday for Joe, and it was much too long since we'd seen them.  We took out some of Eileen's lovely blue glassware to use for the occasion.  So late, so tired, but it was a wonderful evening....  Mary

Heaven knows, my photography skills are very much limited to point-and-click.  There is no real knowledge of technique or settings.  But with the new digital technology even I can get lucky with some interesting photos....  Mary
